Questions & Answers
Getting started
Do I need an account to start?
Not to download, but yes to start — a free account, no card. The app signs in with Google or a one-time email code, which starts your 14-day trial and ties your license to you instead of a machine. Your plan documents never touch a server — the account holds your email and license, nothing more.
What's in the free trial?
Everything, for 14 days, no credit card. It's time-limited, not feature-crippled — the import → edit → export round trip has to be experienced whole to be judged. Three days before it ends you get a reminder to back up, and exporting your work stays open after it ends.
How do I import an AI-generated plan?
Save the plan your AI tool produced (Claude Code, Task Master, or any other) to a .md file, then bring it in — File → Import Markdown (⌘I), the sidebar's Import Markdown button, or drag the file onto the canvas. Phases, tasks, numbered sections and checkboxes land as a draggable card tree.
Can I start from a blank canvas instead of importing?
Yes. Create cards directly on the canvas, arrange them in the task tree, and export a Markdown plan when you're ready to hand it to an agent.
File safety
Does my data ever leave my machine?
Your plans don't. Documents, projects and the Agent Control Tower all work on your own machine; nothing is synced and no server sees their contents. The app goes online only for sign-in, license checks, and update checks, and your sign-in tokens are stored with your operating system's keychain.
Can export keep my original file, except my edits?
Turn on “Preserve source document” (it's off by default) and a full export of an imported plan patches your original file instead of regenerating it: only the lines of cards you edited are rewritten, every other line stays byte-identical, so git diff shows exactly your edits. Selected-card exports and projects created from scratch are written out fresh.
What happens to my files if I stop using TaskHolder?
Nothing — they were never trapped. Importing never changes your source .md file, and exports are plain Markdown, JSON, YAML or text. Uninstall the app and your plans are still sitting in your repo or notes folder, readable by anything.
License & pricing
Is this another subscription?
No. $39, once. The license lives on your account and doesn't expire.
Can I move my license to a new machine?
Yes — there's no key and nothing to deactivate. Your license lives on your account: install TaskHolder on the new computer, sign in with the same account (Google or email), and you're licensed. Reinstalling works the same way.
What's the refund policy?
The app license: the 14-day full-featured trial exists so you never have to buy blind. Refunds are available only within 7 days of purchase: if you purchased and something's genuinely wrong, write within those 7 days and it'll be sorted.
Prompt sets are different — they're non-refundable. A prompt set is a .json file delivered the moment you pay; once it's downloaded you keep its contents, so the sale is final. That's flagged on the buy button before you commit. If a file won't download or arrives damaged, that's on us — write and we'll replace or refund it. See the Terms for the formal wording.
Compatibility
Does it work with my AI tool's output?
If it writes Markdown, yes: Claude Code plan mode, Task Master, other AI tools' output, or a plan you wrote by hand. The parser understands keyword headings (Phase / Task / Subtask and friends), numbered sections, checklists and Korean legal numbering, with Video and Blog modes for scripts and content calendars — all resolved into one clean card tree.
Which platforms does it run on?
macOS 12 or later (Apple Silicon and Intel, one universal app). A Windows version is planned through the Microsoft Store. Everything in the editor works the same on both, with one exception: launching a Claude Code session straight from a card relies on macOS Terminal, so on Windows those menu items are shown as unavailable. On Windows, export the plan as Markdown and start Claude Code in your own terminal.
Is there a web / browser version?
No — deliberately. The whole product is built on things a browser can't do reliably: watching your local files for agent edits, atomic writes back to disk, reading your local Claude Code sessions, keychain-backed sign-in. A cloud version would mean uploading your plans, which is exactly what TaskHolder exists to avoid.
Troubleshooting
My markdown didn't parse the way I expected.
Look at 🧭 Parsed as in the footer. It shows which of the five reading modes TaskHolder used, and you can pick another one right after importing: TaskHolder reloads the original file in that mode and discards edits made since the import. An import never changes your .md file. If no mode fits, send me the document; real documents are how the parser improves. Tips for writing plans that import well
The app says it needs an online re-check.
Keep working — a failed check or an unreachable server never locks the app, and export always stays available. After a long time offline the banner reads Re-check required (online); connect to the internet and it clears after the next successful check.
An agent edited my plan file while it was open. What now?
TaskHolder watches the source file, so it notices when something outside the app — an AI agent, your editor, a git checkout — changes it while it is open. When that happens it asks which version you want, and it never overwrites either side silently:
- Keep your version — what is on your canvas stays, and the next save or export writes it over the file on disk. The agent's changes in that file are replaced.
- Load the version from disk — the agent's edits come in, and edits you made on the canvas since opening the file are discarded.
If you have changes on both sides and want to keep them, cancel first, export your canvas version to a different file name, then load the disk version and carry your edits over by hand (a git diff between the two files makes this quick). Keeping the plan in a git repository means either version can always be recovered.
One more case: if you merged another file into the project, it is no longer linked to its original .md, so later changes to that file are not detected — the project itself is the source of truth.
My exported file looks different from the original.
That is expected when “Preserve source document” is off, which is the default: TaskHolder then writes a freshly organized plan instead of patching your file. Turn the setting on and do a full export of the imported plan to rewrite only the lines of cards you edited. Selected-card exports and projects created from scratch are always written fresh.
The app asks me to sign in again after every restart.
This happens when the computer has no secure storage (the OS keychain) available. TaskHolder never writes your login token to disk as plain text, so it keeps it in memory only and you sign in again after a restart. Your plans are not affected. Once the system keychain is available the login is remembered normally.
